Thai New Year Festival –SONGKRAN

You13 April is very important to Thailand people because it’s their new year. You don’t know about it? At lease you heard about a festival where everyone will pour water on you because the water means blessing? That is SONGKRAN FESTIVAL which is Thai New Year.

I never attend any related celebration before although I wanted to. This year, due to my job, I have the chance to be in the temple. My manager was there together with me, he did tell me to prepare to get wet, really wet and I should put all the money and important things into plastic bag. Luckily I listened to him. I almost don’t want to border because I though I will only get to see but not involve because I’m working. Haha, I was wrong, TOTALLY WRONG.

The situation is still ok in the morning because I’m selling things, so the public just walk by and some of them just use mineral water bottle to pour some water at your back so that you can still look nice in front to continue your work. Some of them even use powder and perfume.

After lunch time, at around 1pm, crowd started to move in and environment became very “hot” because of the concert and the traditional Thai dancing performance on the stage. More and more people move in with all their weapons – pails, bottles, anything that you can use to keep water. You will feel the “dangerous” if you are with nothing on your hand, hehe. Quickly I called Francis to bring the “weapon” to save me. Anyway, other then I have one more person to help me, the weapon is useless….you will know why later…

Someone started to attack me from behind; at first I just stand there assuming nothing. Suddenly someone started to pour a pail of water from my head. Then the game start, I don’t even know who did it but I just get a bottle of water and pour to everyone that I can see. I regretted….I have only one bottle…I saw 10-20 of them with their own big pail ( I shouldn’t call it pail…it’s a water tank…now you know why).

Both of me and Francis was attacked and we can’t even see who did it….because the water was pour to us continuously. Then they stop for a while. We open our eyes and saw them pour in some ice cube in the water tank and started to attack all the people around them, everyone around tried our best to “steel” the water from their water tank. At the end, we don’t care whether we know each other or not but everyone around us was totally wet.

You thought things end there? No, definitely not! MPPP water tank lorry came (those watering plants at the road side) with the big big pipe behind and someone “shooting” those at the roadside. I thought it’s still ok because we are inside. I’m wrong again. Two lorries moved into the compound. Everyone getting crazier…everyone on the lorry pour water to every one of us standing around….we can’t do much because we didn’t have that much water although there are still some people pour ice water to them then they will pour more water from the lorry….and we are so happy.

This is the first time for me to celebrate the new year together with so many Thai people but I’m really happy. All of them are good. If they don’t know you, they will greet you first before they pour water on you (before the thing get crazy in the afternoon). So it’s still safe for you to be there in the morning and get out in a dry cloth. If you wanted to stay until afternoon, you better be ready to get wet. It’s no chances for you to get out dry, even you are wearing rain coat, I’m sure that you won’t survive.

Hey man, if you experience and celebrate Songkran, be prepared to get wet and don’t get angry. You will really enjoy the trip and you will really release your tension. I wanted to be there again next year no matter what. I am felt excited and happy with this experience; it’s really a great experience.

This is the photo that my manager taken for me when i just arrived.

This photo was taken after 2 hour standing there. No photo after that, because everythign was too wet d.....
